I just finished Jim Wallis’s “God’s Politics: Why the Right Gets It Wrong and the Left Doesn’t Get It“.
I have been reading it on the train during my commute for the last couple of months (as my desire to read goes in cycles it seems). My interest in politics has never been real high. My cynicism (which may or may not be well founded) creates an environment of no action. I mean, why bother right? Governments rarely do the things they should, break promises faster than they can make em (how’s that for cynical?).
Beginning to look into politics and government policies has coincided with our becoming involved with those, who for a variety of reasons, are less fortunate. Friends who rely on the social systems in place just to get by.
It is here where I have come to believe that cynicism is useless if I truly desire change. It is here that I have realized that we create policies that keep the poor poor, and make the rich richer. Dollars drive policies.
I have never been to a protest. I have never protested anything. But I think I need to start.
I am still a newby at this stuff, which is frustrating for me. It is very easy to feel completely overwhelmed with a lack of knowledge. At least I do. But we’re learning. And listening.
It seems to be yet another thing where thinking is slowly becoming aligned with lifestyle. It seems to be a theme in our life this last year, and it doesn’t look like it has any intention of stopping.
